We are the Dunbar Band.
Our award-winning band program includes the highly competitive Dunbar Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Color Guard, and Winter Guard. Our membership proudly represents the Paul Laurence Dunbar High School in honor bands across the state, competitions nationwide, and as ambassadors of music around the world. Meet the Directors
BRIAN MORGAN, DIRECTOR OF BANDS
Mr. Morgan comes to us with over thirty years of experience as a music educator, arranger, and composer. A former member of the Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corp, he studied under James Campbell and Bret Kuhn. He then went on to teach the Sky Ryders Drum and Bugle Corps as well as the Bluegrass Brass Senior Corps. While earning his undergraduate degree, he instructed the University of Kentucky Marching Band, University of Kentucky Indoor Percussion Ensemble, and the Eastern Kentucky University Marching Band.
Mr. Morgan has been with Paul Laurence Dunbar High School for 27 years. During this time, the Dunbar band has been a KMEA State Marching Band finalist twenty five times, and has won seven KMEA State Championships.
Mr. Morgan earned his B.M.E. and M.M. (music theory/composition) from Eastern Kentucky University, where he studied with Jason Koontz and Rob James. He is an educational artist for Innovation Percussion drum sticks and mallets.
KEVIN CHRISTIE, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR
Mr. Christie is a native of Humboldt, Tennessee and holds a Degree in Music Education from Austin Peay State University in as well as a Master of Music Degree from Morehead State University.
Mr. Christie began his teaching career in 1998 and has held positions in Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas. Throughout his 18 years of teaching, his middle school and high school bands have consistently received Distinguished and Superior Ratings at district, state and national level festivals and competitions, both in concert and marching band.
He is a member of NAfME, KMEA, Phi Beta Mu and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Fraternity and has served in a number of District and State offices for the Kentucky Music Educator's Association. Mr. Christie is pursuing an Education Specialist Degree in the Educational Leadership program at Morehead State University and is an active marching band drill writer and music arranger.
BRIAN ROBINSON, COLOR GUARD DIRECTOR
PLD welcomed Brian and his staff during the 2009 season, bringing excitement and experience to the program. Brian is a Dunbar Band alumnus who played Baritone in the 2003 State Champion Band (the first one in class AAAA). He was also a member of the 2004 Winter Guard Tri-State Championship.
After graduation from PLD, Brian marched with the Madison Scouts, the Santa Clara Vanguard, and the Cadets (where he had a lead role in the Mad Hatter), and the Cavaliers who won high guard at DCI that year. He also marched four years at the Pride of Cincinnati, winning 2 golds and 2 silvers.

Please be assured that 100% of your donation goes directly to support the activities and expenses of the PLD Bands. We have 0% administrative costs as all administrative duties are performed by parent volunteers. All band expenditures are monitored and approved by the Band Parent Board of Directors who are elected each year by the full BPA membership.
